For many, the idea of visiting someone in a hospital or hospice setting can feel intimidating, or even a little sad. But Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice – Greater Youngstown Chaplain Daniel Tayman believes it doesn’t have to be that way. With humor and years of experience, Tayman brings a fresh perspective to bedside ministry in his new book, “And You Visited Me.”

Drawing from nearly 15 years of hospice chaplaincy and two decades of church ministry, Tayman offers a practical, heart-centered guide for anyone looking to bring light and comfort to those who are ill or nearing the end of life. He has seen firsthand how simple, intentional acts can profoundly impact someone's day.

“The title of the book comes from Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:36, ‘I was sick, and you visited me,’” explained Tayman. “The structure of the book – seven chapters – was chosen to echo the biblical importance of the number seven. It has been in the works since 2020. I started it during a time when I couldn’t visit patients in-person, so instead, I started to compile their stories.”

At its core, “And You Visited Me” is a collection of real-life stories from Tayman’s time visiting hospice patients, each shared with their permission. It is built around seven simple actions that he believes can transform any visit: Read, Pray, Give, Laugh, Watch, Sit and Sing. Whether you're reading a favorite Psalm or singing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ together, Tayman shows that showing up matters.

Beyond his new author designation, Tayman is an award-winning employee who goes above and beyond to provide spiritual care and unending support to those in his sphere of influence. His determination to improve the lives of patients, families and staff members throughout Youngstown and Cleveland is unparalleled.

“We call him our very own Patch Adams,” shared Sarah Hadley, Executive Director, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice – Greater Cleveland and Greater Youngstown. “He doesn’t just focus on the work, but instead, meets everyone where they are to listen, mentor and offer sound guidance. Working in a hospice environment, our leadership team is often charged with making very difficult decisions, and Chaplain Dan makes sure we are well-cared for and prayed for. There have been so many times that his prayers and conversations provided the clear direction we were seeking.”

Tayman’s compassion reaches far beyond his role at Ohio Living too. He actively leads and participates in community service projects, outreach efforts and conferences both locally and around the world. His mission work has taken him to Senegal, Mexico, Paraguay, and New Orleans, where he’s helped build churches and support local communities.

The book release was recently covered by local media in the Mahoning Valley. Click here to watch the video. It is now available to purchase on Amazon.

“One of the purposes I have in writing this book is I want to get people out of their seats and making visits,” emphasized Tayman. “Visiting the sick is not just a kind gesture, it’s a critical act of love and service.”
