Through innovative tools like Rendever virtual reality (VR) headsets, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice helps residents and patients continue to explore the world and connect with memories, without ever leaving their rooms.
Mike, an Ohio Living Bethany Hospice patient, spent his final year navigating the challenges of Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Once a U.S. Air Force officer, he earned his pilot’s license at just 16 and spent decades building and flying planes.
Interestingly, Mike was never able to fly for the military because of an eye condition. That didn't keep him out of the skies, though. He built two planes in his garage and "flew all his life," said his wife, Peggy. He also built model airplanes. "Everyone knew he loved to fly."
As his mobility declined, Mike remained grounded, until Ohio Living's Make It Happen® program stepped in. Donning a VR headset, Mike virtually climbed into the cockpit of a plane just like the one he used to fly, soaring through the sky once more.
“It was such a blessing that Mike was able to experience flying again, which was his favorite thing in the world,” Peggy reflected. “I know he loved it.”
Rendever’s VR technology has opened powerful new possibilities for our patients, from swimming with dolphins to witnessing the Northern Lights. More than entertainment, these experiences reduce isolation and bring comfort when it’s needed most.
Make It Happen® is a program that brings special moments of joy and meaning to those nearing the end of their lives by fulfilling their life-enhancing wishes. Each moment is unique and personal: It can be larger than life, like a hot air balloon ride, or a simple wish for family at a distance to come together one last time.
