Ohio Living Foundation Board Member Spotlight: Dorothy Blom

For Dorothy Blom, giving back to Ohio Living became deeply personal following the loss of her husband, Bruce, in 2021. In his memory, Dorothy created the Bruce Blom Memorial Garden, a peaceful space on Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber’s campus.

“When my husband suddenly passed away in October of 2021, I decided to create a memorial garden in his honor,” Dorothy shared. “Working with the Ohio Living Foundation helped me discover the joy of giving and the impact it can have on others.”

Inspired by that experience and her gratitude for the community, Dorothy later accepted an invitation to serve on the Ohio Living Foundation Board.

“I have so much gratitude for Ohio Living and all they do for residents,” she said. “Giving is wonderful, and if you see that it makes an impact to your neighbors and community, what more could you ask for?”

Since then, Dorothy has worked with the Ohio Living Foundation to promote philanthropy across campus, helping fellow residents explore ways to support programs and services that enhance community life.

The Bruce Blom Memorial Garden remains especially meaningful to Dorothy. As the garden’s sole donor, she continues to add to and beautify the space.

“It is such a comfort and joy to me,” she said. “I’m delighted to see residents enjoying the garden and benefiting from it.”

Dorothy has lived at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber for 10 years and has remained actively involved in campus life. She has served on nearly every committee, including as president of the Resident Association, and currently hosts first-run movies and Metropolitan Opera showings for residents on weekends. She also participates in current events discussions and volunteers with the OWLS board.

Originally from New York, Dorothy has lived in several states and traveled extensively around the world. When she’s not volunteering, she enjoys cooking, entertaining, practicing origami and learning new crafts.

“I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff and everyone who works here to make this my home,” Dorothy said. “I feel fortunate every day to live here, especially with my balcony overlooking the memorial garden.”
