As the social worker at Ohio Living Breckenridge Village’s Shafer/Schweitzer House, Katie helps residents make essential connections and thrive in their living environment.
“I assist residents with all sorts of things, like applying for various types of benefits, reviewing their insurance, and bringing in services to help them age in place or transition to a higher level of care,” noted Katie. “I love getting to see the residents thrive in their environment and make connections with other residents. Learning about their lives is a daily reward!”
Having just celebrated her five-year anniversary with Ohio Living, Katie’s biggest piece of advice for others considering a career in healthcare is to prioritize and practice self-care. “Healthcare is a very demanding and sometimes draining job, and you cannot care for others unless you are taking care of yourself,” she advised. “Also, you need a sense of humor to do this job!”
On a personal note, Katie is married to Bryan, who is also a healthcare professional, and the couple has a daughter, one-year-old Evelynn. They love to go on family breakfast dates on the weekends and explore new parks after work on the weekdays. “Seeing Evelynn learning and exploring brings me joy every day,” she added.
