Social Work Month Spotlight: Maxwell

From intern to social worker to clinical supervisor, Maxwell has spent nearly nine years delivering on Ohio Living’s mission. In his current role with Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice - Greater Toledo, he leads the hospice team of social workers, spiritual care coordinators, massage therapists, volunteer coordinators and the bereavement program.

“Our department focuses on the emotional, mental and spiritual sides of a patient and family’s experience with hospice,” Maxwell summarized. “We are involved to educate, advocate and mediate, while making sure a patient’s wishes are kept top-of-mind. We assist with community resources, long-term care planning, connecting to faith and assessing the patient’s overall comfort. Our bereavement services support the external community by supporting staff at facilities who have experienced loss, providing support groups, as well as education on hospice, long-term care planning and information about how Ohio Living can help bring comfort and ease to situations.”

Supporting his employees and their ideas is important to Maxwell. “I love finding ways to elevate the team’s morale in ways that bring playful rigor to our practice,” he added. “It’s so important to listen in order to gain understanding, because we can’t change what we don’t know or see.”

Beyond office hours, Maxwell is currently a student at University of Toledo, and he is pursuing a healthcare administration degree. He is married with two stepchildren and three cats. Gardening, advocating for underserved and vulnerable populations, writing, reading and video gaming are his favorite pastimes.

To those who may be interested in getting involved with Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice, Maxwell shared, “We are always looking for volunteers to support our patients and families. Our team also offers internships for students looking to enter the healthcare field. Visit our website for more information.”
